Why Sell?

A very wise man once said, “The greatest idea in the world is worth little until someone can be persuaded to accept it”.  If you doubt this, study the lives of the world’s greatest geniuses-Galileo, Watts, Whitney, Pasteur, Westinghouse, Edison and many others. You’ll discover that every one of these men got his great idea in a flash of inspiration, then spent years, and very often their lifetimes with heartbreaking struggle to persuade people to accept it.

One cannot help but wonder how much easier it would have been if a salesman at that time trained in modern methods in today’s dispensation    had been on hand to do their persuading. The above statement was culled from a book I have just finished reading titled: Modern Business: Sales and Sales Management by Elmer G. Letterman, a business classic.

No matter what you do as a profession you are selling. And I have come to understand as the years go by, for you to get people to buy into that idea that you have turned into a book, song, a wonderful piece of art; a software app, a fashion design, a scent in a unique bottle, and even an innovative recipe, you need to acquire good marketable and selling skills.

And if you can’t do so yourself, then the services of good salesmanship must be employed. In today’s world selling has become much easier than in the olden days. Thanks to the advent of technology in all ramifications that we do not have any excuse whatsoever not to succeed in business. As we employ the use of successful selling strategies, businesses will thrive notwithstanding.

And as a veteran salesman once said: ”The life of  the business depends on sales. This however, cannot be overemphasized.
